CrashCarBurn Don’t Play Games
11 May
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing CrashCarBurn at this weekends Kleine Libertas Teater [www.kleinlibertasteater.co.za] where they supported The Ataris on The Ataris Tour of South Africa.
I spent the day watching the various bands play and was reasonably impressed with various bands, in bits and pieces. Autopilot were pretty decent, Cat String Theory had their moments, and Reburn put on a decent show as usual.
I had never seen CrashCarBurn play and I was very impressed. Not only were the songs well put together, but the lyrics had that singalong theme to them, the crowd got into the vibe and singer Gareth Barnes has an engaging presence and interacts well with the crowd.
Wikipedia says:
The CrashCarBurn story
“Imagine you’ve been living your life without a care in the world, happily going about your ways with little concern for the people around you. Then, one day, youre involved in a massive car crash. Who knows how, but you manage to drag yourself from the flames. Its a miracle you survived! Either you pick yourself up and simply carry on the same way you did before, or you realise that you might not be here tomorrow, and start making some changes towards becoming a better person. This band has been that car wreck for us. We hope it will be for others too.”
The band had groupies vying for attention after the show and… and they were the hottest girls there, respect!
Serenade was my favourite, the Medley of Summer of ’69, Since You’ve Been Gone and Built this City was a crowd pleaser. To be honest though, these guys can pull off their own material and pull it off well.
Here’s a Youtube Vid of Serenade by CrashCarBurn.
Foto Na Dans were popular with the crowd but to be fair I was still digesting CrashCarBurns performance, before one of the old groups of Cape Town Music Hog Hoggidy Hog came on stage. That was a sight to see after a long time of me not seeing them (is that grammatically correct?) I love thier mix of various music styles and the trumpet and trombone on stage goes down a treat after watching guitars and drums all day.
The Ataris finally came on stage and didn’t dissapoint. Boys of Summer and Diary were duly belted out, under a full moon with the Southern Cross directly overhead. Stage divers and repeat offenders (you KNOW who you are RYAN!!) came and went and the evening wound down. The world’s worst car guard woke up from his booze fueled sleep (my picture didn’t come out, damn you Samsung Omnia DAMN YOU TO HELL!!) and we all went on our merry way.
I had fun, can you tell?

you do know Crash Car Burn are ex Tweak… that would explain the tones of hot groupies, some would say they are sellouts and just rode with whatever is popular, hence the change from pop punk to well… scremo
yeah i do, I just hadn’t seen them play before as CrashCarBurn. I actually chatted to some of the ‘regulars’ on the scene and they were saying that a lot of the genre has changed. I enjoyed it theyre a class act.
Dan, the band are not Tweak with a changed name, Tweak disbanded during their time in London, and CrashCarBurn was formed afterwards. The only thing in common with Tweak is that Garth and Brendan used to be in Tweak, other than that the other members are new and so are the songs.
And if making music that you actually love and that people enjoy singing along to is selling out, then I’ll sell out any day.
this post from me is waaay late, but hey, never better than late…..or wait, umm, ya.
Anyways, Tweak was always a band with some catchy tunes. And I think the new entity which is CCB is a cool growth point from that.
Looking forward to more of their offering.
