Fire at Cape Town Easter Vortex
So I’ve heard there was a serious festival ending fire at the Easter Vortex outdoor Trance party in Cape Town over the weekend.
This is a pretty serious thing and it’s a miracle no-one got killed based on the eye witness accounts I’ve read. Various reports reckon up to 7 cars were gutted and 2 people suffered from smoke inhalation. Partygoers tried to keep the fire at bay until fire crews arrived.
Now I’ve been to these things in the past and what I find rather surprising is that not a single post I’ve read has mentioned the freak out this must have been to obvious ‘few’ at the party on mind altering substances. I must admit, if you had to ask me what the worst thing is that I could imagine a bunch of people tripping could possibly experience while being all ‘spiritual’… well it would be an out of control fire.
Respect to the folks who pitched in to help out before the authorities took over, and a big up to the organisers for getting everyone out safely. Here are a couple of the few pics I could find.
I must stress I’ve been to some of these events and they’re pretty well organised. Don’t expect one isolated incident to be the norm, but do expect tighter hazard protection for future outdoor events… oh and it never hurts to take your own firefighting thingies and first aid kits to anything that’s planned as a weekend long event.
Apparently it was a pretty happening party before it all went down.
how did it start?
no idea. people were camping and there were probably people doing fire dancing (not 100% sure as I wasn’t there) and people were DEFINATELY smoking ‘stuff’. So take your pick!
