Nando’s to ruffle more Malema feathers

24 Apr

Nando’s hasn’t chickened out. Barely an hour after saying they would pull an advert featuring a puppet that looks like Julius Melama, they have announced that a follow up advert will appear shortly.

I don’t know what all the fuss is about, Malema should be flattered with the faint praise and appreciate that this kind of media actually increases the spotlight on him, isn’t that what he wants?

Earlier, Julias and pals had threatened militant action on Nandos outlets, yet had this to say about the ad campaign.

They further had this to say…

Contacted by The Star in Limpopo, Malema refused to discuss the furore. “I’m not interested in Nando’s, I’m only interested in election results,” he said, adding that there were “more important things than chicken”.

ANCYL spokesperson Floyd Shivambu on Thursday said that, after a 20-minute meeting, Nando’s had agreed to scrap the adverts.

“This was not a difficult issue as they… knew it was a wrong advert. They agreed with us.”

Shivambu said Nando’s would “continue to properly advertise their products in a suitable manner, and disassociate the ANC Youth League and its president, Julius Malema, from their adverts.

“The league strongly believes in freedom of expression and creativity which respects other people and organisations.”

Earlier, the league had said no “lousy explanation” would be good enough for the “disgusting” advertisement, which had used “cheap satire to undermine electoral politics in South Africa”.

I find this all a abit rich, just last week Julias and co were telling us how they used smoke and mirrors to discredit Zille and distract her while the ANC went on to election glory. Surely the Youth League should dismiss this as satire and get on with governing or whatever?

Anyway here’s the advert again,
