Why? Well, Shem has just achieved the notable “accolade” of being named Britains youngest grandfather – aged just 29!

Yup, Shem’s family are taking the UK’s teen-pregnancy vibe to a whole new level. To give you the abridged version of events, Shem Davies became a father to young Tia at aged 14. Not to be outdone of course, Tia has herself given birth to a little girl, Ava one week shy of her 15th birthday, making Shem the UK’s youngest grandad!

Amongst other things, Oupa Shem – who is jobless – was quoted as saying the following, “”One minute Tia’s a baby, the next she’s pregnant. I could have yelled at her, but what’s the point?”.

He went on to say, “I always lectured her on contraception…….”.

It’s really shameful that the UK has created a system of benefits that actually encourages this sort of tragic occurrence. It’s one thing to have a teen fall pregnant where the mother and baby can benefit from the assistance of a working grandparent, but it’s not a very encouraging start when the only options are a jobless 29 year old grandfather or state benefits. It’s almost a given that the benefits route will lead to further children in an attempt to secure more benefits, so that you never miss a weeks fags or lotto tickets.

And thus the cycle continues.

Modern Family?

Who would have thought Hobbits and humans could successfully reproduce?

Now this isn’t just your routine pro swimmer making a beeline across the channel, and here is a little bit more about this challenge.

There are 6 in the team and they take it in turns to swim for an hour at a time.

They have a week’s window in which to attempt the challenge and and they’re given the nod by their skipper on the best time to attempt it.Then they have to take to the water in their boat.

They will have a pre-agreed order to swim in and they must follow it.

The first swimmer gets in the water and will then swim BACK to shore and onto land. Then they officially set off for France!Each person swims for an hour at a time and then the next person takes over.

If they break their order, or don’t complete their hour, or can’t swim for any reason then they are disqualified.

Sounds delightful!

Here are the frequently asked questions…

How far is it?

It’s 26.39 miles across but due to the tides we’ll actually swim between 30-40 miles.

How long does it take?

The fastest crossing is 7 hours and 17 minutes. The longest is 26 hours, 50 minutes. Your guess is as good as mine but I’d bet on it being nearer the latter! I think we’ll all end up swimming 3 one hour legs with some lucky people doing another hour. This means that some people in the people will almost certainly be swimming at night!

How cold is the water?

In July the water temperature is around 60 degrees fahrenheit or 15 degrees celsius, although this can vary. The rules state you are only allowed to wear one swim suit (NO WETSUITS), one swimming cap, goggles and grease. This means either putting on weight to protect yourself from the cold, or acclimatising by getting used to swimming in these conditions. (BE- My own preferred method is the former but the latter makes more sense, hence joining the Serpentine Swimming Club).

Where abouts in the Channel will we swim?

Swims are typically from England to France, with some nutters swimming back! We’ll be leaving near Shakespeare’s Cliff or Samphire Hoe (in between Folkestone and Dover) and will hopefully finish at or near Cap Gris Nez (between Boulogne and Calais). When we’re finished the pilot turns around and brings us back.

What about the boat?

We have an escort boat that will carry the rest of the team when they aren’t swimming. They will be our support out on the water giving hot drinks and plenty of encouragement. The boat captain, Kevin Sherman, will be adjusting our course and plotting our route as we go.

What do the rest of the team do while you’re swimming?

They will keep an eye on the swimmer to make sure they don’t suffer from fatigue and hypothermia. They will feed them periodically, watch for boats and alert them of any danger or debris. Plus they will keep warm, sleep and try not to be seasick! They also probably dread the moment it’s their turn to get back in!

“A total lunar eclipse will be visible from South Africa on the 15th of June 2011. The last total lunar eclipse visible from this region was in February 2008 and the next one will only be in September 2015,” the SAAO told News24 in a statement.

Despite the regular nature of eclipses, astronomer Dr Enrico Olivier said that this was quite special.

“It’s special in the sense that it’s a total eclipse which is somewhat more rare than a normal lunar eclipse which is usually a partial or penumbral eclipse,” he told News24.

The next total eclipse will be visible from SA in September 2015. The moon will enter the earth’s shadow at 21:22 and at 23:03, will start to leave the earth’s umbral shadow.

Well it’s just been reported that the winner of Idols 2009 Jason Hartman has been invited to perform at the royal wedding of Prince Albert of Monaco and the South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock.

Hartman, who apparently received an invitation to the wedding, is “jumping for joy” at the prospect of performing at the wedding, Channel24 reported on Monday.

“It is a very big honour … We are flying this week and will stay in Monaco for the next seven weeks,” Hartman reportedly told Beeld newspaper.

Together with his brother on drums and his father on guitar, Hartman will also open a gala event on 27 May at the Monaco Grand Prix ahead of famous acoustic rock group The Eagles.

The bride and groom will get married during a two day ceremony in Monaco on July 1 and 2 this year.
