You’ll remember last year I wrote an article on Theodore Yach who did his 63rd swim between Blouberg and Robben island last year to show support for Aquila Private Game Reserve’s ” Saving Private Rhino” initiative.
Last year two of their male Rhino’s got poached at the game reserve. When a Rhino’s horn get’s cut off they can survive but not for long, basically its too painful for them to eat or drink and they end up starving to death.
Over the weekend, my other half took me to Aquila Private Game Reserve for a much needed get away. I was wowed within my first ten minutes on the reserve. We were treated to some hot towels on our arrival followed by a welcome drink.
A buffet lunch was served and we were then whisked away on our first Safari.
After seeing elephants, rhinos and antelope we were taken to the far side of the reserve for a drink and a snack while we watched the sun set behind the mountains. Of course they saved the best for last. Before making our way to “camp” we got to see the one thing I was looking forward to most. A pride of Lions! I was absolutely amazed and spent the entire time at dinner ( also buffet) saying how awesome it was. I think my other half was getting slightly annoyed.
Armed with our bottle of wine we headed for the beautifully set up bar/lounge area and just took in our surroundings. We enjoyed a great nights sleep in the cottages, complete with their outdoor showers. Waking up to a Cape Buffalo right outside our door was a treat.
After a buffet breakfast we were allowed to go on another safari but this time it was on horse back. No, we didn’t see the lions on this trip which suited me just fine!
Just two hours out of Cape Town and we got the feeling that we were in the middle of nowhere far from any modern day hassles. You can find Aquila on Facebook or you can go to their website www.aquilasafari.com . They also run deals on Groupon.
Aquila is a romantic setting for any couple and also provides for families so be sure to take your kids along when you do go. If you are looking for a game reserve that is close to Cape Town, affordable and has all the sights, then choose Aquila Private Game Reserve.
